She completed her undergraduate psychology (2000), Master of Education (2002), and Doctor of Philosophy (2007) degrees at the University of Alberta. Both graduate degrees were done in the Department of Educational Psychology and were specialized in the Learning, Development, and Assessment stream. Since completing her degrees, she has taught various psychology-related courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels at several universities. Dr. Gear became a registered psychologist in 2006. She became involved with CAAWLS four years ago when her school wanted to implement an animal wellness program. Dr. Gear has a cheeky therapy dachshund named Ernie who spent two years at a regular biweekly placement at Wings of Providence, a second-stage women’s shelter for mothers and their children who have fled family violence. He now goes to many drop-in events for CAAWLS. Dr. Gear became a board member shortly after having Ernie certified, and was a board member for over a year before being nominated for president.
