Volunteer Overview

Does your pet love people? Are they friendly with strangers, confident in new situations, obedient and love to be the center of attention? Then we are looking for you!!

CAAWLS certifies dogs, cats, birds, rabbits and mini-horses as therapy animals to volunteer at our affiliated facilities.

Don't have a pet but would still love to volunteer with CAAWLS? Find out how below!

How do I get my animal certified?

In order to be certified, all animals must pass the same requirements:

  • obedience test
  • temperament test
  • health check
  • 3 month probationary period

Animal handlers must also attend a volunteer handler orientation session to learn how to handle their animal in therapy sessions. It is important that your animal not be fed a raw meat diet, otherwise they will not be able to volunteer with CAAWLS.

How do I become a volunteer with my pet?

  • Complete the volunteer forms on the website and submit them to CAAWLS.
  • Complete the certification process with your pet.
  • Attend a CAAWLS volunteer orientation session.
  • Complete a criminal record check, and child welfare check (if applicable).
  • Attend the facility orientation session (of your chosen placement).
  • Pass the 3 month probationary period.

While CAAWLS appreciates anyone willing to volunteer, we are currently looking for folks able to volunteer during week days.

If you don't have a pet, or your pet too young/old/shy, that’s okay too!  We’re also looking for volunteers to help us coordinate and run events.
